Terminating an employee in a way that does not create morale problems with other workers is an important aspect of managing a work force.
At any operation, when a person is fired, other employees watch closely how the separation is handled. What they see sends a powerful message to them about the character of the company that employs them.
This is true even when an employee richly deserves to be fired because of a history of poor performance and uncooperative behavior. Employees take notice when even the most undeserving employee is treated with respect and processed out in a systematic way that makes clear that the decision to terminate has not been made capriciously.
In other cases, where the employee or employees in question is productive and well liked but must be terminated because of changing business circumstances, the need to use a thought system of due process is all the more important to the morale of the company's work force. &l ...
